West Portal parent Lenette Thompson has dedicated herself to protecting and improving our community and our schools. After attending Lakeshore Elementary, Aptos Middle School and George Washington High she is continuing the local legacy by raising her four children in the city - a fourth generation of native San Franciscans.
A longtime San Francisco fire lieutenant, Lenette was a natural fit in taking a leadership role in the Parent Teacher Association, becoming West Portal Elementary PTA President in 2014 and driving a collaborative campaign to support teachers and improve the facilities. Identifying critical areas where the PTA could be most effective, Lenette worked with other parents to provide the school with a technology lab, new furniture, new books in the classrooms and new books to go with an upgraded library shelving structure.
Lenette brought her passion for education to politics when she worked with District 7 Supervisor Norman Yee on participatory budget grants resulting in a West Portal grant for shade structures and benches for the kids to have their lunches in comfort. “When I was a student, I was sitting on the asphalt having lunch outside,” she shares. “It seemed wrong that 40 years later my kids were sitting on the ground, too.”
Her deep community connections also came into play when she facilitated a substantial donation from a generous anonymous donor to establish a Wellness program at West Portal Elementary. In support of the Social and Emotional Curriculum, the program just finished it’s first year and it is a resounding success. This is a huge opportunity to help our kids learn the benefits from a whole-body/whole-mind program. Teaching them to pause and breath before reacting. To self regulate their inner landscape. Train the mind the body will follow.
As her neighbors know, Lenette’s garage door is always open! You’re welcome to stop by anytime for a chat about schools, safety and social justice.
